Great videos are a must if you want your viewers to buy into your product or service. To help create great videos, we’re sharing 10 tips for improving clarity in video storytelling in Icfth.
1) Put yourself in the shoes of your audience:
The more you understand what your audience may be thinking, the easier it is to improve their experience with your content. While it’s impossible for everyone to know how the entire audience feels throughout a video, doing research on similar videos will give you insights into what works and what doesn’t work.
2) Avoid distractions no matter how tempting they may be:
There is nothing worse than having one of those “creative minds” pull something unexpected out of nowhere and throw everything off balance. With that in mind, you need to think about your location, the props, music, and any other items that may be distracting that could cause your video to lose its visual appeal.
3) Be mindful of the camera:
Even if you’re not a professional videographer, you’ll want to give yourself a few pointers before hitting record. For example, shooting at eye level will make the person on camera look more natural and comfortable. If possible, it would also help if there’s minimal movement in front of the camera while it’s recording. Even a small movement can cause the frame to be off balance if not recorded properly.
4) Learn how to place your video in two dimensions:
If you’re creating video content for the web, an easy way to improve the quality of your videos is by adjusting the aspect ratio. A 4:3 ratio is typical and most people prefer this size because it fits the screen perfectly while also displaying text. However, if you want to make things a little more interesting, try shooting in a 16:9 aspect ratio that is wider than tall and cuts off some of the sides of videos.
5) There are three types of sync sound:
When editing your videos, there are three types of sound you can use to enhance what’s happening on-screen. The first is usually referred to as “sync sound.” It’s the type of stuff you’ll find in Super 8 movies and apparently, most people are used to this type of sound. The second is usually referred to as “multiple sound.” This type of sound is perfect when you want a conversation in your video, but it would probably be more effective if there were other sounds playing at the same time as well. The third is typically referred to as “noise removal.” Just like with multiple sounds, this clip can be placed anywhere in your video and it will create a much better overall finished product.
6) Don’t move the camera too quickly:
When filming your videos, you don’t want to move the camera too quickly because it can cause unwanted motion distortion. The first thing most people think about when they see this type of distortion is how dizzy it makes you feel. Depending on what type of camera you have, this may or may not happen when moving the video around during editing.
7) You don’t need a lot of equipment to create great content:
If you’ve been considering creating videos for your business, you may be worried about having to invest a lot in expensive equipment. The good news is you don’t have to be camera-shy! All you have to do is grab your smartphone, snap a few pictures, edit the video and you now have high-quality content that looks professional.
8) Don’t use filters, instead adjust color balance:
If you’re going to edit your video, don’t use filters because they give a false sense of professionalism. Instead of getting distracted with images that look pretty but lack quality, play around with adjusting color balance so the colors are more realistic and help the video stand out.
9) Tell a story:
If you want to capture your audience’s attention, telling them a simple story will help keep their interest. For example, if you’re going to shoot a video about you selling your product, make sure the video is an extension of your brand. Show your audience what their lives will be like with your product in it, and you’ll automatically become more credible.
10) Improve the audio quality:
With today’s technology, it’s easier than ever to improve the quality of your audio. However, one thing that can make or break a good video is having good-sounding audio that’s easy to understand. If you don’t have a lot of money to invest in professional equipment for this type of project, don’t worry there are plenty of editing programs that include stock sound effects and music designed just for improving the overall quality.
