I think it’s time for all of us to be more aware of what our industry is and is not doing. We’ve spent billions of dollars in the last 15 years trying to create a better, more sustainable, more environmentally responsible way to operate and to think about what we’ve done.
To be fair, our industry and the industries we operate in are pretty large and complex and we’ve been at this for a long time (since about 1998), so it might be hard to not be really, really aware of what we do all the time. Even if we did, I doubt it would change much, because the problems we face are pretty much the same all over the world.
No matter how much we try to change, it seems like we always end up in the same exact place. The only difference is we all get together every so often and talk about it and try to figure out how to get there. In the meantime we continue to operate as the same industry we always were.
And then there’s the really obvious one. If you don’t know, the Internet is the one place where you can still be totally, completely, completely, totally unaware of the way the world works.
And that’s exactly why it’s so frustrating. It doesn’t matter how much internet everyone has, all you can do is hope that it works. And even then it’s not really that easy. We have to depend on a lot of people and institutions to do the heavy lifting. We can’t all be part of the same organization and all be doing the same thing together. But it’s still a pretty big help.
It is frustrating. Ive been a programmer for about ten years. I know it sounds crazy, but Ive watched a lot of people come and go from the field. Now I work in programming for Microsoft, where we do web development. Ive watched a lot of different companies come and go. Ive had to learn a lot of new things.
I think it has to do with how much we assume we know about the industry. We all get this idea that software development can be done by “individuals” who “learn” by doing it. I don’t think that idea of “individuals” as we know them is realistic. We are still a “class of people” in a lot of ways. Just as with any other profession, there are different “levels” of knowledge.
We tend to think we know more than we really do. In my own career Ive been an independent developer for 15 years. In that time Ive learned what I know about the business. That being said, Ive learned a lot about both how good and bad the web development market is.
It appears that independent developers are a pretty common sight in the web development world. I think that there are more of them than ever before, and this is because of a couple of factors. One, it is easier to break into independent programming than it is to break into a team. The other factor is that there are a lot of people who want to learn web development, but who seem to hate the idea of actually doing it.
While it seems that the average developer is still relatively new to the web development process, there are a lot of developers who have been doing it their entire lives. The biggest one of these is probably Andy Kindler. His website is the first on this list. If the entire site is any indication, he’s been developing web applications for at least 10 years. His website is full of all sorts of really good and bad advice.
