As the title implies, this conference was an ethnographic research trip into the praxis of two different industries. This trip included a company that manufactures baby diapers and a manufacturer of high end sports equipment. I spoke to both companies, as well as several other types of manufacturers and retailers as well.
One of the primary reasons I decided to do this trip was to see what the difference was between the two industries. I wanted to see how the various types of people in these companies thought about their products and how they interacted with one another. I don’t think I really expected to find a lot, but there were a few interesting results.
There was a big difference in how the two industries see their products and how they interact with one another. In the sports equipment industry, the companies all wanted to ensure that the people they worked with would like and trust them. They were all concerned with making sure that their customers were happy with each other. The companies also looked to one another as a way to find out about their competitors.
The sports equipment industry certainly seems interested in looking out for each other’s interests. The company that makes our shoes is one of the largest manufacturers of sports equipment in the world, and they know the people that work for our shoes are all looking out for the same thing. In fact, one of the people who works at our shoes used to work at one of the other companies, and that company even has the same CEO.
The point is that it’s great to know who your competitors are so you can learn from them, but there are also times when it’s useful to do some research yourself. That’s exactly what a few of our industry colleagues did at the recent Ethnographic Perspectives in Industry conference.
The event, which had nearly 300 attendees, was hosted by the Society of Ethnographers and ran on the first day, but there was a panel discussion on the second day that focused on an area of expertise, ethnography.
On the first day the conference was dominated by the topic of business. The speakers were all from the IT industry, but it was nice to hear from people who also work in the legal field, the government, the financial industry, the environmental community, and the medical industry. They talked about how they see the field and what they do in the workplace.
The field of ethnography is a broad term for people who study people and cultures. The term is used to describe anyone who is interested in the social, cultural, and historical backgrounds of people. Those interested in ethnography come from any field, but the term is used to describe people who study people and cultures.
The term ethnography is also a bit of an oxymoron. We don’t “study” any people or cultures, we just study the people and cultures that we’re interested in. It’s a lot harder and more complex than that, and is even very difficult for someone who has a degree in anthropology to actually do it.
In the first few minutes I was struck by how fast our topic was going to come, and just how different it would be from the typical ethnographic conference that I have attended. There was a lot of information on different types of ethnographic techniques and techniques for collecting and analyzing information. There was a presentation on writing ethnographic case studies as well. There were also talks on ethnographic methodologies and how to take ethnographic data and use it in research.
