The best way to see what a critic thinks of a book, film, or album is to see what their friends and family members think. If you can get reviews from people you know and trust you can be sure of a good experience.
You can also look up reviews from “public” sources like Amazon or iTunes. A lot of these sites are like magazines in that they have a lot of reviews. But when you search for something like “satisfaction guaranteed” you are looking for reviews from people who are “satisfied” with the experience. Since you are looking for reviews from people who have actually read the book or album, you are likely to get positive reviews.
Because you are looking for reviews from people who actually have already read the book or album, it’s possible that some of the reviews you see will be positive but a lot of them will be negative. However, this is where the “publish or perish” advice comes in. If you are reading a review that says, “It was great, but I think some of the characters were too over the top,” then it is likely you shouldn’t read that review.

I say this because some of the reviews on Amazon seem to be written by people who have a serious problem with the main character, and a lot of them seem very negative.
