That really is interesting because, in his day, most contractors were at least nominally motivated by a desire to make money.
In one of the most widely read business surveys out there, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recently published a survey of home builders. The survey found that nearly half of home builders are currently experiencing an “industry-wide shortage of skilled general contracting professionals” (yes, really). This shortage does not, however, mean that home builders are facing a shortage of labor.
But there are two problems with the survey. First, it’s based on data from the builders themselves. Although most home builders I know have good intentions, they’re a small subset of the homebuilding industry. They are also a small fraction of the people who actually do the work for homeowners. Second, this same survey was conducted in 1990, when home building was a much simpler business.

In many regards, builders are like any other market. We need to know what we’re doing, and so we need to find out what others are doing. But in other ways, builders are different from the rest of the market as well. They have a unique relationship with their customers and they can build whatever they want. We need to be able to do the same for them.
Standard industry surveys are nothing new. For example, the American Home Association conducted a survey about builders in 1997, and published a report that concluded that the industry should consider doing a standard survey. It is still the case that the survey is not commonly done.

It just goes to show that the surveyors are not in it for the money. The survey isnt a good indicator of real business growth. If you are a surveyor, you are probably working a full night out, because the survey isnt a very good indicator of your company’s performance.
